Many breast cancers are stimulated to grow by the estrogen and progesterone. Such cancers can be treated with drugs that block the effects of these hormones. In postmenopausal women, estrogen is mainly produced through conversion of androgens (sex hormones produced by the adrenal glands) to estrogens.
